I was born in Russell County, Alabama, during the 1960s — a time when segregation shaped nearly every part of life. Growing up in a large family, I always knew deep down that God had a purpose for me.
My parents were sharecroppers, and I watched them work those fields with determination and faith. But what inspired me most was how they turned those same fields — the ones they once labored in — into land they eventually owned. They didn’t stop there. My parents went on to build local businesses and became deeply involved in the community. My father even helped run local elections in Russell County — something that was truly extraordinary for that time. Their courage and perseverance showed me what was possible, even when the odds were stacked against us.
Education came naturally to me, but my heart always belonged to the arts — especially theater. That passion came alive while I attended Shaw University, a proud HBCU that helped shape who I am. I had the incredible opportunity to co-star in the hit musical “Purly Victorious” and travel across the United States, performing alongside inspiring artists like Shirley Caesar, the late Thalmus Rasulala, and Alex Hailey of “Roots” fame. One of the greatest honors of my life was being invited to the White House and the Pentagon to support military families and share my story.
But as much as I loved the stage, God began stirring something new in my heart — a calling to heal. I realized that my true purpose wasn’t just to entertain but to help heal hearts and minds. That realization led me to begin my journey toward becoming a doctor and entering the mental health field.
Today, I work in the mental health community as a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI) for the state of Florida. Soon, I will be a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and a published author. I love the work I do — partnering with local government agencies to empower individuals and families across Dade and Broward County. Every day, I get to see lives change, hope restored, and communities strengthened.
Through it all, I thank God for my journey. I’m the proud wife of Minister Alfred Allen Sr., the loving mother of Alfred Allen Jr., and the joyful grandmother of Juan Dixon. My story is one of faith, perseverance, and purpose — and I’m still walking the path God designed just for me.
